The Abyss of Vacari
Beyond the Familiar Boundaries
What exactly is the Abyss of Vacari?
The name alone invites certain assumptions.
A bottomless pit.
An endless void.
A place where the dead disappear.
Perhaps even another name for death itself.
In Vacari, none of those descriptions fully captures the truth.
The Abyss is a place.
A mysterious realm existing beyond the familiar boundaries of the world, the Abyss can be reached.
It can be entered.
It can be crossed.
And, perhaps most importantly, someone who disappears into its darkness is not necessarily dead.
They may still be alive.
Somewhere beyond the boundary separating Vacari from the Abyss.
Wandering.
Surviving.
And perhaps searching for a way home.
A Realm, Not an Ending
The distinction matters.
When someone falls in battle, death has a finality that those left behind must eventually confront.
The Abyss offers something considerably more uncertain.
If a person can physically enter it, then disappearing into the Abyss does not provide the same certainty.
Where are they?
Can they survive there?
Can they find their way back?
And if they cannot...
Could someone else go after them?
These questions transform the Abyss from a distant source of darkness into something far more complicated.
It is not simply an ending.
It is somewhere beyond.
Beyond Vacari
The exact nature of the boundary separating Vacari from the Abyss remains mysterious.
It is not a road someone casually follows beyond the edge of a kingdom.
Travelers cannot simply consult a map and choose the safest route.
The Abyss exists beyond the ordinary paths connecting Vacari's civilizations.
Yet separation does not mean isolation.
The two realms can touch.
Magic can cross between them.
Gateways can create passages.
Creatures from the Abyss can enter Vacari.
And inhabitants of Vacari can cross in the opposite direction.
The barrier exists.
It is simply not absolute.
Entering the Abyss
There is more than one way someone might find themselves within the Abyss.
Some enter willingly.
They may seek power.
Knowledge.
A particular being.
Or something hidden within the realm's darkness.
Others may have considerably less choice.
Someone can be taken into the Abyss against their will.
That possibility changes the meaning of disappearance.
A missing person may not have vanished from existence.
They may have been taken somewhere extraordinarily difficult to reach.
And if that person remains alive, hope becomes dangerous.
Because hope gives those who love them a reason to follow.
Darkness and Suffering
The Abyss is not a welcoming place.
Its darkness can cause suffering.
The realm contains creatures and powers capable of harming those unprepared for what waits there.
Simply surviving within it may present dangers that inhabitants of Vacari have never experienced.
But the effect of the Abyss is not identical for everyone.
Some fear its darkness.
Some suffer because of it.
Others embrace it.
That difference can shape what someone becomes within the realm.
The Abyss may be dangerous.
But danger does not prevent some from seeing opportunity within it.
Valyndra Shadowwalker
Few people demonstrate the complicated relationship between an individual and the Abyss more clearly than Valyndra Shadowwalker.
Valyndra was not merely someone who studied the Abyss from a distance.
She was raised within it by a dark sorceress.
The realm therefore became part of her formative experience.
Its darkness was not an unfamiliar terror discovered later in life.
It was something she knew.
Something that helped shape the person she eventually became.
To someone raised within the Abyss, the realm would inevitably look very different than it would to a traveler suddenly dragged across its boundary.
One sees an alien darkness.
The other may see something disturbingly close to home.
Vuarus and the Darkness
Vuarus provides another example of someone who did not simply recoil from the Abyss.
He embraced its darkness.
That choice reveals something important about the realm.
The Abyss itself does not dictate a single response from everyone who encounters it.
Individuals still choose.
They interpret.
They seek different things from the power surrounding them.
One person may desperately search for escape.
Another may willingly descend farther.
Understanding the Abyss therefore requires understanding not only the realm itself, but the people who choose what to do once confronted by it.
Shadows Unveiled
The Abyss's influence upon Vacari became apparent as far back as Shadows Unveiled.
Even then, the realm demonstrated that distance did not prevent interaction.
Magic could be transferred into the Abyss.
Gateways could be opened.
The boundary could be crossed.
And perhaps most unsettling of all...
Something waiting within the darkness could reach back.
Those events established a truth that would become increasingly important as the history of Vacari continued.
The Abyss was not sealed away.
Whatever separated it from Vacari could be breached.
Gateways
A gateway changes everything.
Without one, the Abyss may seem impossibly distant.
With one, the boundary becomes a doorway.
Opening such a passage is not necessarily simple or safe.
Magic capable of reaching beyond familiar reality carries risks of its own.
There is also the question of what exists on the other side.
Opening a gateway does not guarantee control over what happens afterward.
Something may pass through.
Someone may cross.
And once the boundary has been opened, those standing in Vacari may discover that they are not the only ones capable of using it.
A doorway works in two directions.
A Way In
Later events reveal another crucial fact.
A gateway does not merely allow something from the Abyss to enter Vacari.
It can provide a way into the Abyss.
That possibility carries enormous consequences.
If a person can cross intentionally, then the Abyss is no longer merely somewhere people disappear.
It becomes somewhere others can potentially follow.
Doing so would be extraordinarily dangerous.
The inhabitants alone provide reason for caution.
The realm's magic creates additional uncertainty.
And finding someone within an unfamiliar world is considerably different from simply crossing its boundary.
Entering may prove to be the easy part.
Finding the way home could be another matter entirely.
Lost Does Not Mean Dead
Perhaps the most important truth about the Abyss is also the simplest.
Lost does not necessarily mean dead.
Someone taken into its darkness may remain alive.
They may be injured.
They may be frightened.
They may have no idea how to return.
But alive changes everything.
For those left behind, uncertainty can be both cruel and powerful.
If death were certain, grief could begin.
But if someone might still be somewhere within the Abyss...
Waiting...
Then giving up becomes a choice.
And some people in Vacari are remarkably bad at giving up on those they love.
Searching for a Way Home
Survival within the Abyss is only part of the problem.
Escape presents another.
Someone taken there against their will may know nothing about the realm.
No map.
No allies.
No understanding of where gateways might exist.
No certainty that time, distance, or magic behave exactly as expected.
They may spend their days searching for something familiar.
A passage.
A weakness in the boundary.
Any sign that Vacari remains reachable.
But they would not necessarily know whether anyone on the other side was searching too.
That possibility creates one of the most haunting aspects of the Abyss.
Two people could be trying desperately to reach one another from opposite sides of a boundary neither fully understands.
What Waits Within
The Abyss is not empty.
Its known inhabitants include several forms of dragons and creatures possessing abilities rarely encountered elsewhere.
Shadow Dragons.
Abyssal Dragons.
Specter Dragons.
Nightshade Dragons.
The Shadow Wraith.
The Maelstrom Serpent.
The Wraithbound.
And those are merely the inhabitants currently known.
Other beings remain connected to the realm in ways not yet fully understood.
Some may never have crossed into Vacari.
Others may be waiting for the right gateway—or the right summoning—to bring them through.
The Abyss is a location.
But it is also an ecosystem of darkness whose full extent remains unknown.
A Realm of Choice
There is another reason the Abyss cannot simply be treated as synonymous with evil or death.
People make choices within it.
Valyndra was shaped there.
Vaurus embraced its darkness.
Others might reject everything it represents and devote themselves entirely to escaping.
The realm can influence.
It can tempt.
It can cause suffering.
But individuals remain part of the equation.
Some will seek power.
Some will seek survival.
Some may seek a way home.
And someone standing safely within Vacari may decide that leaving them there is unacceptable.
Crossing the Boundary
That brings the greatest question surrounding the Abyss back to something remarkably personal.
Imagine someone being taken.
Not killed.
Taken.
Their family knows they may still be alive.
Their friends know gateways into the Abyss can exist.
They also know what lives there.
Would they accept the disappearance?
Would they decide the danger was simply too great?
Or would someone begin searching for a way across?
Opening a gateway would only be the first step.
Someone would have to enter.
Someone would have to survive.
Someone would have to find the missing person.
And then both would need to come home.
It would be an extraordinarily dangerous undertaking.
Then again, the history of Vacari contains more than a few people who have never been particularly sensible when someone they love needs help.
The Mystery Beyond
Much about the Abyss remains unknown.
Where did it originate?
How vast is it?
How many regions exist within it?
What other civilizations or creatures may inhabit its darkness?
How many gateways have existed throughout history?
Can every gateway be reopened?
And what happens to someone who remains there for too long?
Some answers have already begun to emerge.
Others remain hidden.
That uncertainty is part of what makes the Abyss so dangerous.
Vacari understands enough to know that the realm exists.
Enough to know that it can be entered.
Enough to know that its inhabitants can cross into the familiar world.
And enough to know that someone lost there may still be alive.
Perhaps that knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance.
Because once someone knows there might be a way in...
They may eventually decide there must also be a way back out.
Beyond the Darkness
The Abyss of Vacari is not simply a bottomless pit.
It is not an endless void.
It is not another name for death.
It is a place.
A mysterious realm beyond familiar boundaries where darkness takes forms the peoples of Vacari are only beginning to understand.
Some enter willingly.
Some embrace what they find there.
Others may be taken against their will and spend their time searching desperately for a way home.
And somewhere on the other side, someone may be searching for them.
The Abyss separates worlds.
But the boundary between them can be crossed.
The question is no longer whether someone can enter.
The question is what might happen when someone decides they have a reason worth risking everything to do it.
