Ong Swifthammer
The Warrior Who Found His Place
Across the long history of Vacari, heroes have risen from royal families, ancient bloodlines, hidden civilizations, and legendary orders.
Ong Swifthammer followed a different road.
A warrior shaped by experience rather than privilege, Ong built his reputation through courage, loyalty, determination, and an unwavering willingness to stand between danger and those he cares about.
His journey has carried him across kingdoms, beneath the oceans, into battles against enemies who threatened all of Vacari, and eventually toward truths about his own past that changed his understanding of family forever.
Yet for all the extraordinary events surrounding his life, Ong has never been defined solely by battle.
His story is equally one of friendship.
Of belonging.
Of the family he found along the way.
And of the woman whose life would become forever intertwined with his own.
A Warrior Before Everything Else
Long before prophecy and ancient threats reshaped his life, Ong was a warrior.
Practical, determined, and accustomed to facing danger directly, he learned to rely upon experience rather than elaborate displays of power.
He does not need recognition for every victory.
He does not seek admiration simply because he has fought battles others would fear to face.
When someone needs protecting, Ong acts.
That straightforward sense of responsibility has remained one of his defining qualities throughout every chapter of his life.
It has also occasionally placed him in situations considerably more complicated than anything he expected.
Lady Keisha
No relationship has shaped Ong's life more profoundly than the one he shares with Lady Keisha.
Their journey together began through circumstances neither could have predicted, but over time trust grew into something deeper.
Ong came to understand both Keisha's strength and the burdens she carried as a leader of the Eladrin. Keisha, in turn, discovered someone who would stand beside her without attempting to diminish the independence and determination that made her who she was.
Their relationship was not built upon one dramatic moment.
It developed through shared danger, difficult decisions, victories, losses, laughter, and the countless quieter moments between battles.
Eventually, that bond became a partnership that neither wished to face the future without.
Ong did not simply fall in love with Keisha.
He became part of her world.
And she became part of his.
An Unexpected Companion
Of course, loving Keisha meant accepting another very important presence in her life.
Pumpkin.
The black panther has accompanied Ong and Keisha through an extraordinary number of adventures, eventually becoming almost inseparable from them.
Pumpkin is no ordinary traveling companion.
She has crossed kingdoms, traveled beneath the sea, befriended dolphins, charmed the people of Coraluna, and become a guardian of the underwater kingdom itself.
Even the Nerathai have learned that Pumpkin's visits are generally a good time to remain somewhere else.
Ong has long since accepted that when Pumpkin decides she is joining an adventure, there is little point arguing.
The panther is coming.
The Rescue of Queen Jeanne
During the events of The Wicked Phoenix, Ong's journey carried him beneath the waters of Coraluna alongside Keisha as they sought help rescuing Queen Jeanne from Serpent's Lagoon.
There he met Princess Adrianna and Aquilus, beginning friendships that would endure far beyond the immediate crisis.
The rescue required cooperation between peoples who might otherwise have remained separated by land and sea.
While Aquilus and the Thalaryn mermen drew the deadly hydras away from the island, Adrianna and the Thalaryn women summoned storms and charmed the serpents guarding the shoreline.
Ong and his allies were given the opening they needed.
Queen Jeanne was freed.
The mission demonstrated something Ong would encounter repeatedly throughout his life:
Vacari was strongest when its peoples stood together.
Beneath the Seas
Ong's friendship with the Thalaryn did not end after Serpent's Lagoon.
During Shadows Unveiled, he returned to Coraluna with Keisha and Pumpkin as the growing danger facing Vacari demanded alliances reaching beyond the surface kingdoms.
King Oceanous guided them deeper beneath the sea, where they eventually encountered Lysander, God of the Sea.
The meeting helped establish a relationship between the civilizations of the surface and the powers guarding the oceans.
For Ong, it was another step into a much larger world.
He had begun as a warrior accustomed to confronting enemies he could see.
Now he found himself standing among ancient civilizations, gods, dragons, and forces whose histories stretched far beyond a single lifetime.
He adapted.
Because that is what Ong does.
A Friendship with Aquilus
Among the friendships Ong formed beneath the sea, his bond with Aquilus became particularly enduring.
Both understood the responsibilities carried by warriors entrusted with protecting others.
Neither required elaborate explanations of why someone would willingly place themselves in danger for the sake of another.
Sometimes warriors simply understand one another.
And sometimes they stand together watching a black panther play with dolphins and laugh.
Not every memory needs to involve saving the world.
Some of the best ones do not.
The Family He Chose
As Ong's relationship with Keisha deepened, his understanding of family changed with it.
He became connected not merely to her but to those she loved.
Among them was Lord Karrenen, whose relationship with Keisha eventually became that of father and daughter.
Karrenen's concern for her naturally extended to the warrior standing beside her.
That did not always make Ong's life easier.
A protective father—particularly one who happens to be a powerful mage—has opinions.
Ong learned to live with them.
More importantly, he understood why they existed.
They both loved Keisha.
That mattered far more than whatever disagreements might occasionally arise between them.
The Family He Never Knew
Ong's life would eventually reveal another extraordinary truth.
His connection to King Manard of Crystal Vale.
Discovering that Manard was his father gave Ong something he had never expected: another family and a brother in Prince Gailen.
Blood alone, however, could not instantly create the years they had never shared.
Relationships still had to grow.
Trust still mattered.
Understanding still required time.
For Ong, the revelation did not erase the family he had already found.
It expanded it.
The warrior who had spent so much of his life forging his own place in the world suddenly discovered that his story had always been connected to another kingdom.
Brothers
The relationship between Ong and Gailen added another dimension to both men's lives.
Gailen had grown up as the acknowledged prince of Crystal Vale, surrounded by expectations of the throne.
Ong had lived a very different life.
Yet the differences between them did not have to become divisions.
Both were warriors.
Both understood responsibility.
Both had people they would defend without hesitation.
And both were sons of the same king.
Their paths had begun separately.
Now they had the opportunity to decide for themselves what being brothers would mean.
A Warrior Among Dragons
As the conflicts threatening Vacari grew larger, Ong increasingly found himself standing beside creatures and powers once confined to legends.
Ancient Dragons returned.
Dragon riders emerged.
Old alliances shifted.
New enemies crossed boundaries that had once seemed secure.
Through it all, Ong remained fundamentally the same man.
He might stand beside gods.
He might speak with Ancient Dragons.
He might enter kingdoms hidden beneath the sea.
But when danger arrives, his first instinct remains remarkably uncomplicated.
Protect the people beside him.
The Prophecy
There are forces surrounding Ong and Keisha whose significance reaches beyond either of them individually.
Prophecy has intertwined their paths with events still unfolding across Vacari.
Neither sought such a burden.
Neither requires prophecy to explain why they stand together.
Their bond was forged through choices made long before either could know where those choices might ultimately lead.
Whatever destiny demands of them, Ong and Keisha will face it as they have faced everything else.
Together.
More Than the Battles
It would be easy to remember Ong only as a warrior.
He has certainly earned that reputation.
But doing so would overlook the most important parts of his story.
Ong is the man who formed friendships beneath the sea.
The companion who stood beside Keisha when the world became dangerous.
The warrior who discovered a father and brother he never knew he had.
The reluctant participant in whatever Pumpkin has decided everyone is doing that day.
And the person who repeatedly chooses loyalty even when walking away would be easier.
Those choices reveal far more about him than any battlefield ever could.
The Road Ahead
Ong's journey is far from finished.
Darkness continues gathering across Vacari.
Ancient enemies remain.
Prophecy has not yet revealed everything it intends to demand.
And the people Ong loves continue finding themselves remarkably close to danger.
Particularly Keisha.
He probably stopped being surprised by that a long time ago.
Whatever waits beyond the next horizon, Ong will meet it the same way he always has.
With determination.
With loyalty.
With the people he loves beside him.
And, almost certainly, with a black panther who has already decided she is coming too.
