And somewhere beneath the endless dunes, history continues to sleep.

Life in Afor has never been easy.

Days bring relentless heat beneath an unforgiving sun, while nights can transform the desert into a surprisingly cold wilderness. Sandstorms sweep across open terrain with little warning, burying roads and reshaping familiar landmarks within hours.

Travel requires preparation.

And those who underestimate the desert rarely make the same mistake twice.

Yet generations have learned not merely to survive Afor, but to call it home.

Caravans cross established routes between settlements. Travelers seek shelter wherever it can be found. Dwarven communities thrive near the mountains, while other peoples have adapted their lives to the demanding rhythm of the desert.

Dragons Among the Mountains

Some of Afor's most formidable inhabitants dwell far above the dunes.

Within the volcanic reaches of the mountains reside the fearsome Hellfire Dragons, creatures perfectly suited to a landscape shaped by heat and flame.

Elsewhere, the Blue Chromatic Dragons command their own territories among the desert peaks. Lightning and storms accompany these powerful dragons, transforming portions of the mountains into regions few travelers willingly enter without good reason.

Neither lineage should ever be underestimated.

Their presence has helped shape the boundaries, dangers, and history of Afor for generations, ensuring that even experienced travelers treat the mountains with considerable respect.

Yet darker and chromatic dragons are not the only great dragons whose wings cross the desert skies.

The Brass Bastion

Standing against the dangers of Afor is one of the desert's most important strongholds.

Once associated primarily with the Brass Dragons, the Bastion has grown into something greater. Noble dragons of different flights can now be found within its protection, united by the understanding that defending Afor requires cooperation rather than isolation.

Watching over the Bastion is Aurix, the Ancient Brass Dragon, whose experience and devotion have made him one of the most important defenders of the desert.

The Brass Dragons are not alone.

Ruby Dragons have also lent their strength to Afor, strengthening the forces aligned with the Light and ensuring that those defending the realm do not stand unsupported.

Nearby, the Sun Seriphians have found allies among the Bastion's defenders, further transforming this portion of the desert into a gathering place for those determined to resist the forces threatening Afor.

In a realm where alliances have repeatedly determined survival, the Brass Bastion has become far more than a dragon stronghold.

It has become a symbol of resistance.

Echoes of the Dominion

Afor's history cannot be told without remembering the Dominion.

Long before its forces threatened other regions of Vacari, the desert served as home to one of the Dominion's original strongholds. From there, its influence spread outward, leaving scars that would survive long after battles ended.

During the conflicts surrounding Vuarus and Phoenix Shadowwalker, that stronghold became an important part of the struggle engulfing Vacari.

Eventually, it fell.

Its destruction during the events surrounding Shadows Unveiled ended one chapter of Dominion influence within Afor.

But destroying a fortress does not erase the ideas that created it.

Nor does it guarantee that others will not return.

In the years that followed, new forces began moving through the desert, and the struggle for Afor entered another uncertain age.

A Realm Divided

Today, Afor remains a land caught between competing powers.

Much of the desert has fallen beneath the influence of Lyra Dreadcrusher, whose ambitions have once again brought the shadow of the Dominion across the sands.

Near Acadia City, the Emberdeep Dwarves, led by Molkrag, find themselves caught within the changing political landscape of the realm.

Elsewhere, Oasis City faces dangers of its own beneath the authority of Caryth Shadowmere, where the struggle surrounding the Sun and Moon Seriphians has introduced yet another layer to Afor's growing conflict.

And scattered throughout the desert are ruins whose importance may be far greater than their crumbling stones suggest.

Among them stands the mysterious Cradle of Echoes, another reminder that Afor's past has never truly disappeared.

Those seeking power understand this.

So do those determined to stop them.

Roads Lost to History

Travel through Afor has changed dramatically over the centuries.

Routes once used freely no longer offer the same passage they did in earlier ages. Following the events of Healing Bonds, one of the known entrances into Afor was sealed through the combined efforts of the Noble Dragons, Lysander, and Kadona.

The decision protected Vacari from dangers that could no longer be allowed unrestricted passage.

But it also made Afor more isolated.

Reaching the desert now demands greater knowledge, careful planning, and—in some cases—the cooperation of dragons whose territories stand between travelers and their destination.

Isolation, however, has never stopped determined people for long.

New paths are discovered.

Old passages are remembered.

And the inhabitants of Vacari have repeatedly proven remarkably inventive when circumstances demand another way.

Across the desert, fragments of forgotten structures occasionally emerge when shifting winds expose what time attempted to bury.

No one knows how many settlements—or perhaps entire civilizations—remain concealed below the sands.

Some may have been abandoned during ancient conflicts.

Others may predate the kingdoms remembered by modern Vacari.

In Afor, archaeology is never merely the study of the past.

Sometimes the past refuses to remain buried.
