Valyndra Shadowwalker
The Woman Behind the Mystery
For a long time, she remained hidden.
A presence moving behind the shadows of Vacari.
Her influence could be felt.
Her knowledge raised questions.
Her hatred revealed glimpses of a history no one yet fully understood.
But her identity remained concealed.
Not anymore.
The mysterious woman finally has a name.
Valyndra Shadowwalker.
Daughter of Maelgrim Shadowwalker.
Sister of Phoenix Shadowwalker.
Raised within the Abyss by her mother, an Abyss Sorceress.
A servant of Vaurus, God of Shadows.
And a formidable power whose hatred for some of Vacari's most powerful figures has endured long after the events that first created it.
But Valyndra is not simply another Shadowwalker.
She is not Phoenix returned in another form.
Her ambitions are her own.
Her grudges are her own.
And her view of those around her reveals a woman who has very definite ideas about where everyone belongs.
Preferably beneath her.
And if the quiet tapping of a fingernail begins...
someone may want to reconsider whatever they were about to say.
Born a Shadowwalker
The Shadowwalker name was already known in Vacari long before Valyndra finally stepped from the shadows.
Maelgrim Shadowwalker left his mark upon history.
His son, Phoenix Shadowwalker, would later become one of the central threats faced during the Elves of Vacari trilogy.
But Maelgrim had another child.
A daughter.
Valyndra.
Her existence reveals another branch of the Shadowwalker story—one shaped not only by the family name, but by something far darker.
The Abyss.
Raised Within the Abyss
Valyndra was raised within the Abyss by her mother, an Abyss Sorceress.
That upbringing immediately separates her from Phoenix.
They share blood.
They share a father.
They share the Shadowwalker name.
They do not share the same life.
For Valyndra, the Abyss was not simply a mysterious realm existing beyond the familiar boundaries of Vacari.
It helped shape her.
She grew within a place touched by darkness and powers that many inhabitants of Vacari understand only through fragments of history, dangerous encounters, and the gateways connecting the two realms.
That environment became part of who Valyndra was.
And eventually, she became a formidable power in her own right.
Not Simply Maelgrim's Daughter
It would be easy to define Valyndra entirely through her family.
Daughter of Maelgrim.
Sister of Phoenix.
Another Shadowwalker.
But doing so would underestimate her.
Valyndra does not matter because her father mattered.
She does not become dangerous because Phoenix was dangerous.
Her family explains part of her history.
It does not define the limits of her power or ambition.
Valyndra built connections of her own.
Developed power of her own.
Formed hatreds of her own.
And served someone whose influence would leave a lasting mark upon her.
Vaurus.
Vaurus, God of Shadows
Valyndra served Vaurus, God of Shadows.
Whatever else shaped her, that relationship became an important part of who she would become.
Vaurus represented a power deeply connected with darkness.
Valyndra did not merely know of him.
She served him.
And when Vaurus died, his death did not become something Valyndra simply accepted and left behind.
It became another wound.
Another grievance.
Another reason to hate.
Especially when she looked toward those she blamed for his loss.
A Hatred That Survived Him
Vaurus may be gone.
Valyndra's hatred is not.
Among those who have earned a place within that hatred are the Noble Dragons of Vacari.
She does not view them merely as opposing forces.
For Valyndra, the conflict is personal.
Certain Noble Dragons are connected in her mind with what happened to Vaurus.
And Valyndra remembers.
Time does not necessarily weaken a grudge when the person holding it has no interest in letting go.
In Valyndra's case, it appears to have done quite the opposite.
Kimras
Among the Noble Dragons connected to Valyndra's hatred is Kimras, Ancient Gold Dragon.
Kimras is no minor figure within Vacari.
Ancient.
Powerful.
A leader among the Noble Dragons.
His history reaches across generations of conflict.
That history also places him within Valyndra's view.
And Valyndra is not particularly known for forgiving those she believes have wronged her.
Kimras therefore represents more than another Ancient Dragon standing on the opposite side of a conflict.
He belongs to a history Valyndra has not forgotten.
Amara
Then there is Amara, Ancient Amethyst Dragon.
Like Kimras, Amara has become connected to Valyndra's anger over the past.
Another Noble Ancient.
Another figure whose history intersects with events Valyndra remembers differently.
Another name she has no intention of overlooking.
Valyndra's hatred for the Noble Dragons is not an abstract dislike between opposing dragon factions.
It has roots.
History.
Loss.
And blame.
Those things make hatred considerably harder to reason away.
Not that Valyndra appears particularly interested in trying.
Valyndra and the Noble Dragons
To understand Valyndra, it is important to understand that she does not view the Noble Dragons as merely inconvenient.
Her hostility runs deeper.
They represent forces she despises.
They are connected to histories she has not forgiven.
And some are tied directly to the loss of Vaurus.
That creates a dangerous combination.
Power joined with patience.
History joined with resentment.
And a woman who has already demonstrated that she is capable of remaining hidden while events unfold around her.
Valyndra does not need to forget.
She can wait.
But What About Vacari's Dark Dragons?
Valyndra's relationship with the Dark Dragons of Vacari reveals something equally important about her character.
One might assume that because Valyndra embraces darkness and despises Noble Dragons, she would naturally respect Vacari's Dark Dragons.
That assumption would be incorrect.
Valyndra has her own ideas about hierarchy.
And in her view, Dark Dragons have a place.
The problem is that she expects them to remember it.
They Should Know Their Place
Valyndra does not automatically treat Vacari's Dark Dragons as equals simply because they share enemies or an affinity with darkness.
She believes they should know their place.
That tells us a great deal about her.
Valyndra does not merely want allies.
She expects order.
Her order.
She does not look at every powerful dark creature and see a potential equal.
She sees hierarchy.
Usefulness.
Position.
And perhaps obedience.
That attitude creates one of the clearest distinctions between Valyndra and her brother.
Phoenix Was Different
Phoenix Shadowwalker had his own darkness.
His own anger.
His own ambitions.
But Phoenix respected the Dark Dragons.
Valyndra does not approach them the same way.
That difference matters.
It would have been easy for the Shadowwalker siblings to become variations of the same antagonist.
They are not.
Phoenix had relationships and attitudes shaped by his own experiences.
Valyndra's upbringing in the Abyss and the forces that influenced her created something different.
Where Phoenix could respect Dark Dragons as powerful beings, Valyndra is considerably more inclined to remind them where she believes they belong.
Whether the Dark Dragons agree with her assessment is another matter entirely.
Sister and Brother
Phoenix and Valyndra share a father.
They share a surname.
They share connections to darkness.
And both became formidable threats.
Beyond that, their differences become increasingly important.
Phoenix's story belonged to one period of Vacari's history.
Valyndra's reaches into another.
His relationships with dark powers were his own.
Hers were shaped by the Abyss and Vaurus.
His temper announced itself one way.
Valyndra's can announce itself with something much smaller.
Something almost harmless.
At first.
Tap
A fingernail touches a surface.
Tap.
Again.
Tap.
Valyndra does not always need to shout when she is angry.
She does not need an immediate explosion of rage.
Sometimes the warning comes quietly.
A long red fingernail tapping against the arm of a chair.
Or a table.
Or whatever unfortunate surface happens to be nearby when someone begins testing her patience.
The sound may be small.
The message is not.
A Different Kind of Temper
Phoenix's anger was rarely difficult to recognize.
Valyndra's can be more controlled.
That does not make it safer.
If anything, restraint can make anger considerably more unsettling.
An outburst tells everyone exactly where they stand.
Silence forces them to wonder.
Valyndra can sit.
Watch.
Listen.
Tap one fingernail.
And allow everyone else in the room to decide how concerned they should be.
Usually the correct answer is:
Very.
Control
That restraint reflects something larger about Valyndra.
She has spent considerable time hidden.
A person incapable of patience does not remain an unseen influence for long.
Valyndra knows how to wait.
She knows how to observe.
She knows that not every plan benefits from announcing itself.
Her temper exists alongside that patience.
The combination makes her considerably more dangerous than someone who reacts immediately to every insult.
She can be angry.
And still think.
She can hate.
And still plan.
She can want revenge.
And still wait for the moment she believes will serve her best.
The Woman Behind the Shadows
Before her identity became known, Valyndra existed primarily through clues.
Her knowledge.
Her connections.
Her commands.
Her hatred.
Now those pieces can be viewed through the woman behind them.
The mysterious presence was not simply watching Vacari because she found recent events interesting.
She had history here.
Family here.
Enemies here.
Old grievances here.
And unfinished business.
That makes her emergence from the shadows considerably more significant.
Valyndra is not entering a world she knows nothing about.
She is stepping into conflicts she already understands.
Knowledge Is Its Own Weapon
Valyndra knows things.
That has been apparent for some time.
Knowledge of history.
Knowledge of artifacts.
Knowledge of dragons.
Knowledge of gods.
Knowledge of the Shadowwalkers.
Knowledge of people whose importance may not yet be obvious to everyone else.
Power can destroy.
Knowledge can determine where that power should be aimed.
Valyndra possesses both.
And that is rarely a comforting combination.
The Abyss Never Truly Left Her
Being raised within the Abyss shaped Valyndra in ways that cannot simply be separated from the woman she became.
Its darkness was part of her upbringing.
Its powers were familiar.
Its inhabitants and sorcerers were not distant legends.
For many people in Vacari, the Abyss represents something unknown.
For Valyndra, it was part of home.
That difference changes perspective.
Things others fear may appear ordinary to her.
Things others consider unnatural may simply be familiar.
And boundaries others hesitate to cross may never have seemed quite so absolute.
A Shadowwalker of Her Own Making
Valyndra inherited a name.
What she became afterward was her own.
She is Maelgrim's daughter.
She is Phoenix's sister.
She was raised by an Abyss Sorceress.
She served Vaurus.
She hates Noble Dragons connected to his death.
She looks upon Vacari's Dark Dragons with an expectation of hierarchy rather than automatic respect.
She carries grudges across years.
She knows how to wait.
And she has plans that extend beyond simply avenging the past.
That is Valyndra Shadowwalker.
Or at least...
that is part of her.
Because There Is Still Keisha
There is one subject deliberately left largely untouched here.
Keisha.
Valyndra's hatred for her is impossible to ignore.
But it deserves more than a paragraph hidden inside a larger character profile.
Why has Keisha attracted Valyndra's attention?
Why has that hatred become so intense?
What exactly does Valyndra want?
And what does Keisha represent within plans that have been developing in the shadows?
Those questions belong to another story.
And that story is coming.
For now, it is enough to understand that among all Valyndra's ancient grudges, powerful enemies, Noble Dragons, Dark Dragons, gods, and Shadowwalker history...
somehow, Keisha matters.
Why?
Valyndra isn't finished making everyone wonder yet. 😈
