Valeon

The Strength of an Ordinary Man

In a world filled with Ancient Dragons, powerful mages, legendary warriors, gods, dragon riders, and people seemingly destined for greatness, Valeon is something rather unusual.

He is simply human.

Valeon commands no magic.

He carries no legendary weapon.

He possesses no ancient bloodline granting him extraordinary abilities.

And despite eventually finding himself surrounded by dragons and those who ride them, he has no particular desire to become a dragon rider himself.

His talents lie elsewhere.

Knowledge.

Healing.

Persistence.

Observation.

And an ever-growing understanding of the herbs found throughout Vacari.

There is nothing ordinary, however, about the life Valeon eventually finds himself living.

His journey carries him from a childhood near Flameford to the swamps of Etharyon, into an unlikely friendship with a prince and his companions, through mistakes with devastating consequences, and ultimately toward forgiveness and the opportunity to discover a purpose entirely his own.

Valeon may never become the most powerful person standing among Vacari's heroes.

He does not need to.

His story asks a different question.

What can an ordinary person contribute in a world filled with extraordinary people?

Valeon spends much of his life discovering the answer.

A Childhood Near Flameford

Valeon's story begins far from the legendary adventures that would later define his life.

His mother had fled Flameford, carrying with her a history that Valeon himself did not fully understand.

His father had served Maelgrim Shadowwalker.

That connection placed a shadow over a family already trying to leave the past behind.

Valeon grew up without magic or some obvious destiny waiting to reveal itself.

He was simply a boy becoming a man in a world considerably larger and more dangerous than he realized.

The choices made by his parents before him would eventually matter.

But Valeon's life would ultimately be determined by choices of his own.

Etharyon

Valeon's path eventually brought him to Etharyon, a region of swamps, mountains, and dangers capable of catching an inexperienced traveler unaware.

It was there, in a cantina, that his life changed.

Valeon encountered Prince Gailen of Crystal Vale and the companions traveling with him.

At first glance, there was little reason to believe Valeon would become important to their journey.

He was not a warrior seeking adventure.

He was not a mage.

He was not royalty.

He was simply Valeon.

Yet adventures have a habit of collecting people who never intended to become part of them.

Valeon was about to learn that firsthand.

An Unlikely Friendship

The friendship between Valeon and Gailen developed across experiences neither could have predicted.

Gailen had left the protected world of Crystal Vale and was beginning to understand Vacari beyond palace walls.

Valeon brought an entirely different perspective.

He had no royal upbringing.

No title.

No expectation that anyone should listen simply because of who he was.

Their differences could easily have kept them apart.

Instead, those differences became part of the friendship.

Through Gailen and his companions, Valeon's world expanded.

He encountered people and places he might otherwise never have known.

And slowly, the ordinary human from near Flameford became part of a group walking directly into some of Vacari's increasingly extraordinary events.

The Shimmering Beach

Not every important moment in Valeon's life occurred on a battlefield.

Some were considerably quieter.

At the Shimmering Beach, Valeon encountered a blue-and-silver dolphin.

The meeting was simple.

Unexpected.

And memorable.

In a life increasingly surrounded by danger and complicated decisions, moments like these mattered.

They reminded Valeon—and those traveling with him—that Vacari was more than the wars threatening it.

There were beaches.

Animals.

Friendships.

Strange encounters.

And occasionally a dolphin perfectly willing to splash someone who had not planned on getting wet.

Valeon's journey contains darkness.

But it has never consisted only of darkness.

A Past That Would Not Stay Buried

Valeon's connection to the Shadowwalker family eventually became impossible to ignore.

His father had served Maelgrim Shadowwalker.

That history created vulnerabilities others could exploit.

Valeon found himself caught within circumstances far larger than himself, and the pressure placed upon him eventually led to choices that hurt people who trusted him.

The consequences were real.

So was the betrayal.

Valeon's story does not erase that simply because his circumstances were complicated.

But neither does it pretend that a person's worst decision must become the only thing anyone remembers about them.

What mattered next was what Valeon chose to do after everything fell apart.

Betrayal

During the events of Shadows of Betrayal, Valeon was coerced into betraying those who had become his friends.

Fear and pressure can explain a choice.

They do not make its consequences disappear.

People were hurt.

Trust was damaged.

And Valeon had to live with the knowledge that his actions had contributed to it.

For someone without magical powers or legendary strength, this became perhaps the most difficult battle Valeon had ever faced.

There was no enemy he could defeat with a sword.

No spell capable of undoing what had happened.

He could not return to the moment before the betrayal and choose differently.

All he could control was what he did afterward.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness does not erase the past.

It creates the possibility of a future.

During Celestial Convergence, Valeon's path eventually brought him to that possibility.

The people he had hurt had every reason to be cautious.

Trust, once broken, cannot simply be commanded back into existence.

It must be rebuilt.

Valeon was given something he could not demand and had no right to assume would be offered.

A second chance.

The importance of that moment lies not merely in the forgiveness itself.

It lies in what Valeon chose to do with it.

He could remain trapped by guilt.

He could decide that one terrible chapter had already determined the rest of his life.

Or he could accept responsibility, learn, and become someone different.

Valeon chose to keep moving forward.

Lyra'el

Valeon's journey later carried him to Lyra'el, where his growing interest in plants and healing became increasingly significant.

He traveled there with Keisha, whose own experiences had taught her the importance of healing long after battles ended.

Valeon studied.

Observed.

Learned.

The work suited him.

Plants did not care whether he possessed magic.

Herbs did not require him to carry a legendary weapon.

Healing depended upon knowledge, patience, careful observation, and understanding what could help another person.

For perhaps the first time, Valeon began discovering something that was truly his.

Not Gailen's path.

Not Keisha's.

Not the legacy of his father.

His.

When Keisha Fell

Valeon's journey through Lyra'el was not without danger.

When Keisha was injured by Voraxia, the reality of the threats surrounding his friends became painfully clear.

Valeon could help through knowledge.

But there were moments when knowledge alone could not protect someone in the instant danger arrived.

The experience forced him to reconsider something he had previously resisted.

Dragon riding.

Valeon did not suddenly develop dreams of becoming a legendary dragon rider.

That was never who he wanted to be.

But he promised that he would at least learn.

Not because he wanted glory.

Because there may come a day when knowing how could help someone he cared about.

For Valeon, that reason was enough.

Healing Instead of Glory

As the conflicts surrounding Vacari grew larger, Valeon continued moving in a direction entirely different from many of those around him.

Others trained for battle.

Valeon studied herbs.

Others learned weapons.

Valeon learned which plants could ease suffering.

Others sought greater magical strength.

Valeon sought knowledge.

None of these things made his contribution smaller.

Armies require healing.

Communities require food.

People injured in battles need someone who understands how to help them recover afterward.

Victory means little if no one remains to rebuild what was damaged.

Valeon began finding his place not by becoming more like the extraordinary people surrounding him, but by recognizing the value of what he could already become.

The Radiant Sands

Eventually, Valeon's studies carried him to the Radiant Sands of Afor.

The desert presented an entirely different challenge.

Plants capable of surviving elsewhere could not simply be placed into dry soil and expected to flourish.

Water mattered.

Irrigation mattered.

Understanding the environment mattered.

Valeon began assisting with the cultivation of healing herbs alongside irrigation systems constructed by the Ironvein Dwarves.

It was practical work.

Patient work.

Work unlikely to become the centerpiece of a bard's heroic ballad.

It could also save lives.

For Valeon, that mattered considerably more.

Learning From the Land

Valeon's growing knowledge of herbs is not limited to memorizing names from books.

Plants change with their environments.

Something thriving within a forest may struggle in a desert.

A species growing beside water may behave differently when cultivated elsewhere.

So Valeon observes.

Experiments.

Learns.

The same quality that helped him rebuild his life after failure now helps him understand the natural world around him.

He does not assume that one answer works everywhere.

He adjusts.

His knowledge continues growing because he allows experience to teach him.

Thump

Then there is Thump.

The small red fox entered Valeon's life courtesy of Lord Karrenen.

Whether Valeon originally believed he needed a fox is largely irrelevant.

Thump appears to have made the decision for both of them.

Stubborn, persistent, and remarkably good at remaining close to someone who may occasionally pretend he would prefer otherwise, Thump has become Valeon's companion.

Where Valeon goes, the fox is rarely far behind.

Studying herbs?

Thump is there.

Traveling?

Thump is coming.

Attempting to enjoy a peaceful moment without a small red animal inserting himself into the situation?

Valeon should probably know better by now.

Karrenen gave him a fox.

Thump apparently decided Valeon needed supervision.

The arrangement seems permanent.

An Ordinary Man Among Legends

Valeon's friends include people whose lives are intertwined with some of the greatest powers in Vacari.

Prince Gailen became the rider of an Ancient Crystal Dragon.

Keisha's journey has connected her to rulers, gods, dragons, and prophecy.

Ong became a dragon rider.

Kaelorn became the Forestborne Warden.

Valeon remains human.

No magic has suddenly awakened within him.

No Ancient Dragon has appeared to announce that destiny secretly made him extraordinary all along.

And that is precisely why his story matters.

Valeon does not need hidden power to justify his place beside extraordinary people.

His worth is not waiting for a magical revelation.

It already exists.

The Courage to Begin Again

Valeon's greatest act of courage may not occur during a battle.

It may simply be choosing to continue after failure.

Making a serious mistake can change how others see someone.

It can also change how that person sees himself.

Valeon could have allowed guilt to become another kind of prison.

Instead, he accepted the opportunity to rebuild.

Slowly.

Imperfectly.

Without pretending the past never happened.

A second chance did not erase his mistakes.

It gave him the opportunity to make different choices afterward.

That is what made the second chance matter.

Finding What He Can Give

For much of his journey, Valeon existed among people whose purpose seemed obvious.

Warriors fought.

Kings ruled.

Mages used magic.

Dragon riders rode dragons.

Valeon's place was harder to recognize.

Eventually, he stopped looking for a way to imitate them.

His value lay elsewhere.

Knowledge.

Healing.

Persistence.

The willingness to learn.

The patience to cultivate something that might save another person's life months later.

The ability to keep going after discovering that he was capable of making terrible mistakes.

Valeon did not need to become extraordinary in the same ways as his friends.

He needed to discover what he could give.

The Road Ahead

Today, Valeon continues his studies in Afor.

Healing herbs grow where once there may have been only dry earth.

Ironvein irrigation systems carry water through the Radiant Sands.

Knowledge continues accumulating one plant, one experiment, and one discovery at a time.

There are still challenges ahead.

Vacari remains dangerous.

The conflicts surrounding him have not disappeared.

And somewhere in his future there may still be a dragon waiting to discover just how reluctant a student Valeon can be.

But Valeon no longer needs someone else's destiny.

He has begun building a purpose of his own.

Not every hero needs a sword.

Not every hero needs magic.

Not every hero needs an Ancient Dragon.

Sometimes greatness begins with accepting a second chance.

Sometimes it grows quietly from the soil.

And sometimes it is found simply by discovering what you can give.
