Some warriors demonstrate it with a sword in their hands. Mages reveal it through powerful spells. Dragons display it with wings, claws, elemental breath, and the sheer force of their ancient presence.

But sometimes strength belongs to the person standing among them who makes certain everyone else can keep going.

Zara Sandstring, a woman of the Radiant Sands, has spent much of her life doing exactly that.

An accomplished archer, bard, and keeper of stories, Zara possesses a rare combination of talents that makes her equally valuable around a gathering fire and upon a battlefield. Her voice carries magic capable of strengthening those around her, while the longbow she carries ensures no one mistakes her supportive nature for helplessness.

Now chosen as the rider of Aurix, Ancient Brass Dragon and leader of the Brass Wing, Zara has found herself with perhaps the greatest story of her life unfolding around her.

Fortunately, she has always been very good at listening.

A Daughter of the Radiant Sands

Zara's story begins among the people of the Radiant Sands, where life beneath Afor's relentless sun teaches lessons that cannot be learned from books alone.

The desert rewards preparation, patience, and an understanding that survival often depends upon cooperation.

These lessons shaped Zara long before she ever climbed onto the back of an Ancient Dragon.

She learned that strength does not require standing at the front of every battle.

Sometimes the person watching from behind sees dangers others miss.

Sometimes encouragement given at precisely the right moment matters more than another sword.

And sometimes knowing when to listen is more valuable than knowing what to say.

These qualities would eventually make Zara uniquely suited for a role she could never have anticipated.

Magic Carried Through Song

Zara is a bard, but the magic woven through her songs is not the overwhelming destructive power associated with some of Vacari's greatest mages.

Her abilities are far more subtle.

Through her voice, Zara can strengthen courage when fear threatens to take hold. Her songs can help companions maintain their concentration during difficult moments, ease the exhaustion that accompanies prolonged conflict, and provide limited support when injuries begin slowing those around her.

She does not erase every wound.

She cannot simply sing away every danger.

Nor can her music transform an impossible battle into an effortless victory.

That has never been the purpose of her magic.

Zara strengthens what is already present within the people around her.

Their courage.

Their determination.

Their ability to continue when exhaustion tells them they have nothing left to give.

Her songs do not fight the battle for them.

They remind them that they can keep fighting for themselves.

As the Ancient Brass Dragon and leader of the Brass Wing, Aurix carries centuries of experience and the responsibility of helping safeguard Afor during an increasingly uncertain age.

Becoming his rider placed Zara within events far greater than anything she had previously experienced.

Yet the partnership works precisely because Zara does not attempt to become something she is not.

Aurix does not need another dragon upon his back.

He needs a partner.

From the skies above Afor, Aurix can command the battlefield while Zara observes what unfolds beneath them. Her position allows her to watch allies spread across the sands, identify where support is needed, and use her songs to strengthen those struggling below.

When an enemy moves within range, her bow provides another answer.

Aurix brings the power of an Ancient Dragon.

Zara brings awareness, support, precision, and a remarkably steady voice.

Together, they have become an unusual but highly effective team.

Rider and Dragon

The bond between rider and dragon is not built solely upon battle.

Trust matters far more.

Zara must trust Aurix when they take to the skies, knowing that every turn, dive, and sudden movement places her life quite literally in his claws.

Aurix must trust Zara to remain aware of everything happening around them rather than becoming overwhelmed by the chaos below.

Neither can perform the other's role.

That is exactly why their partnership works.

They complement one another.

And considering Aurix's Brass Dragon nature, Zara possesses another quality that may be nearly as important as her skill with a bow.

She listens.

Keeper of Stories

Long before becoming Aurix's rider, Zara understood something many people overlook.

History survives because someone remembers it.

Victories can be forgotten.

Sacrifices can disappear from memory.

Names once spoken with honor can fade until no one remembers why they mattered.

Unless someone preserves their stories.

As a lorekeeper, Zara carries that responsibility willingly.

She listens to the histories of others, preserves accounts of important events, and understands that the stories passed from one generation to another become part of the foundation upon which the future is built.

Now she has been paired with a dragon who has lived for centuries.

A Brass Dragon who has lived for centuries.

There is quite a lot to remember.

When History Can Answer Back

Most lorekeepers must piece together history from old writings, fragmented records, and stories passed through generations.

Zara has Aurix.

If she wants to know what happened decades—or centuries—ago, there is a reasonable possibility her dragon remembers.

And Aurix is generally quite willing to explain.

In detail.

Considerable detail.

Occasionally with additional details about events that happened before the event Zara originally asked about.

Followed by another story explaining why that detail was important.

For a lorekeeper, this is invaluable.

For everyone else within listening distance, it can become a very long afternoon.

The situation becomes considerably worse when Zara responds with four dangerous words:

“What happened next?”

The other Brass Dragons have learned that this question should never be asked unless everyone has plenty of time.

The Strength Behind the Warriors

Zara Sandstring may never be the loudest warrior on the battlefield.

She does not need to be.

Her strength is found in the courage she helps others rediscover.

It is carried in the songs that steady exhausted allies.

It flies with the arrows she releases when someone needs protecting.

It lives within the stories she refuses to let the world forget.

And it can now be seen soaring above Afor upon the back of one of the most ancient Brass Dragons in Vacari.

Some heroes lead the charge.

Others make certain those heroes have the strength to keep charging.

Zara understands the importance of both.

The Voice That Remembers

As Afor enters another uncertain chapter of its long history, Zara now finds herself witnessing events that future generations may someday know only through stories.

Fortunately, preserving stories is what she does.

Beside Aurix, she will witness battles from the skies, meet dragons whose histories stretch across centuries, and watch new alliances shape the future of the desert.

Her songs will strengthen those who stand beside her.

Her bow will defend them when necessary.

And her memory will preserve what they accomplish.

Because battles eventually end.

Kingdoms change.

Generations pass.

But as long as someone remembers the story, a piece of those who came before survives.

And Zara Sandstring intends to remember.
