The Moon Seraphidians

Children of the Hidden Moon

Across the vast world of Vacari live peoples whose cities rise openly beneath the sun, whose armies march beneath banners, and whose histories are recorded in libraries and royal archives.

The Moon Seraphidians are not among them.

Hidden within rocky sanctuaries, secluded caverns, and passages easily overlooked by outsiders, the Moon Seraphidians are one of Vacari's more elusive races.

They are seen when they choose to be seen.

And when they decide otherwise, even knowing where to look may not be enough.

Half humanoid and half serpent, Moon Seraphidians possess an appearance as mysterious as the culture surrounding them. Their scales shimmer in shades of silver, blue, and pale green, while luminous, moonstone-like eyes reflect their natural affinity for darkness and the night.

Beautiful.

Enigmatic.

Dark-aligned.

Yet appearances reveal very little about what truly lies beneath the surface.

For the Moon Seraphidians have spent generations ensuring that outsiders understand only as much about them as they are willing to reveal.

A People of Stone and Shadow

The Moon Seraphidians favor places where the land itself provides protection.

Rocky formations.

Hidden caverns.

Narrow passages.

Deep crevices invisible from a distance.

Their settlements are not designed to announce themselves to travelers.

Where other civilizations might build towers, gates, or walls to mark their territory, Moon Seraphidians rely upon concealment.

The stone surrounding them becomes part of their defense.

Passages wind through formations that outsiders may mistake for natural cracks. Entrances disappear behind rock. Routes through their sanctuaries can become confusing to anyone unfamiliar with the terrain.

For the Moon Seraphidians, secrecy is not merely useful.

It is a way of life.

Half Humanoid, Half Serpent

Moon Seraphidians possess humanoid upper bodies and serpentine lower forms, allowing them to move across the rocky terrain of their homes with remarkable fluidity.

Both males and females share the distinctive traits of their people.

Their scales commonly appear in cool shades associated with moonlight and shadow—silver, blue, and pale green among them.

Their eyes are perhaps even more striking.

Luminous and resembling polished moonstone, they seem almost to gather the surrounding darkness rather than retreat from it.

There is an ethereal quality to the way Moon Seraphidians move.

Their serpentine bodies allow them to glide swiftly across stone, disappear through narrow openings, and navigate passages that would prove difficult for many humanoid races.

An outsider may see one standing among the rocks.

A moment later, there may be nothing there at all.

Masters of Retreat

Moon Seraphidians are rarely encountered for long.

When outsiders approach their secluded territories, their instinct is not necessarily to confront them.

Instead, they disappear.

They slip between rocks.

Retreat through concealed openings.

Move into caverns inaccessible to those who do not know the terrain.

This should not be mistaken for cowardice.

There is little wisdom in fighting an unnecessary battle simply because an outsider expects one.

The Moon Seraphidians understand their environment.

They know where they can move quickly and where others cannot.

They know which passages lead deeper into safety and which leave an intruder wandering through stone.

By the time an outsider realizes the Seraphidians have withdrawn, finding them again may already be impossible.

Children of the Night

The Moon Seraphidians possess a natural affinity for darkness.

Night is not something they fear.

It is where they are most comfortable.

Moonlight, shadow, and stone form the environment in which their people have lived and developed their traditions.

Their dark alignment separates them sharply from their cousins, the Sun Seraphidians.

Yet describing one people simply as the opposite of the other would overlook the complexity of both cultures.

The Moon Seraphidians have their own traditions, loyalties, motivations, and understanding of the world.

Dark-aligned does not mean mindless.

Nor does it mean that every individual behaves identically.

Like so many peoples of Vacari, they are shaped by their history and by the choices they make within it.

The Sun and the Moon

The existence of the Moon Seraphidians cannot be entirely separated from that of the Sun Seraphidians.

The two peoples are related.

Cousins shaped beneath different influences.

Where the Sun Seraphidians are associated with light, their Moon cousins are drawn toward darkness.

Their differences extend beyond appearance or preference for daylight and night.

Magic itself reflects the divide between them.

Yet precisely how deep those differences run remains difficult for outsiders to determine.

Neither culture can be understood simply by studying the other.

The Moon Seraphidians are not Sun Seraphidians placed beneath moonlight.

They are their own people.

And they have had generations to become something entirely their own.

Magic Beneath the Moon

Perhaps no aspect of Moon Seraphidian culture has inspired more speculation than their magic.

They possess abilities that few outsiders truly understand.

Some of what they can accomplish has been witnessed.

Other abilities exist primarily through rumor.

And there may be aspects of their magic that have never been revealed beyond their own people.

This uncertainty is intentional.

The Moon Seraphidians have little reason to explain themselves simply because outsiders are curious.

Knowledge can become power.

And a people accustomed to protecting themselves through secrecy do not surrender knowledge carelessly.

Those who encounter Moon Seraphidian magic may therefore leave believing they understand it.

They may even be correct.

Partially.

But a fragment of truth should never be mistaken for the whole.

Dark-Aligned, Not Easily Controlled

Their affinity with darker forces has occasionally brought the Moon Seraphidians into the paths of others who believe alignment automatically means obedience.

That can be a dangerous assumption.

The Moon Seraphidians have survived precisely because they understand caution.

They observe.

They retreat when retreat benefits them.

And they reveal only what circumstances require.

They may cooperate with powerful dark-aligned figures when their interests coincide.

That does not erase their identity as a people.

Nor does it make their culture merely an extension of someone else's ambitions.

Vacari contains many forms of darkness.

The Moon Seraphidians represent only one of them.

Beyond the Hidden Caverns

For much of their history, the Moon Seraphidians could remain distant from the struggles of larger kingdoms.

But Vacari is changing.

Ancient Dragons have returned to prominence.

Old powers are moving again.

Alliances cross boundaries that once seemed permanent.

And conflicts increasingly reach peoples who might once have remained safely outside them.

A secluded cavern offers protection from travelers.

It cannot necessarily protect a civilization from events reshaping an entire world.

The Moon Seraphidians are beginning to emerge from the edges of Vacari's history.

What role they ultimately play remains uncertain.

Their dark alignment may draw them toward forces other civilizations fear.

Their survival instincts may lead them in unexpected directions.

And their mysterious magic ensures that anyone believing they completely understand the Moon Seraphidians should probably reconsider.

What the Stone Conceals

The Moon Seraphidians have survived by keeping much of themselves hidden.

Their homes disappear among rock.

Their people vanish into passages.

Their magic remains only partially understood.

Even their intentions can be difficult for outsiders to read.

Perhaps that is exactly as they prefer it.

Vacari is filled with civilizations whose histories have been written across kingdoms, monuments, battlefields, and ancient ruins.

The history of the Moon Seraphidians is quieter.

It waits in secluded caverns.

It moves beneath moonlight.

It watches from among the stone.

And when footsteps approach too closely, it disappears before the traveler realizes what they have seen.

Some mysteries are waiting to be discovered.

Others have no intention of making discovery easy.

The Moon Seraphidians belong firmly among the latter.
